On February 4, 2003, Lisa Chanel and Terence Liley welcomed into the world their first born son, Terence Nuar Liley II affectionately known as “Nuar,” “Nu,” or “T.” From the time that Nuar was a baby, he excelled and showed his independence. He was walking by 8 months and running by 10 months. At 9 months, his first sentence to his mom was “I can do it.” When his brother Girod Aasir was born, he adored his little brother and was always eager to grab a bottle for him or play with him. Terence loved wrestling his father and brother. He also enjoyed movie-time with his mom, reading, playing video games, building model cars and robots, relaxing on the beach, and spending time with family.
Terence enjoyed the aspect of creating and contributing in a way that was impactful, which led to his interest in technology and pursuing a career path in Software Programming and Development. He accomplished a lot of his career dreams during his brief time with us. He began preparing for his future career path in the sixth grade when he focused on testing methods of a droid and was selected as one of the top three winners in the STEM Fair. In addition to showcasing his talents in the tech world, Terence took his talents to the wrestling mat as a Wrestler with the Kerry McCoy Wrestling Camp – University of Maryland and Marlboro Mustangs/Anne Arundel Wrestling teams while in middle school.
When Terence entered Dr. Henry Wise, Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland in 2017, he continued to showcase his talents in technology. He built a parabolic reflector in the seventh grade and was nominated to participate in the STEM Fair. When he joined the STEM Club in ninth grade, he discovered a deeper interest in technology. Terence began laying the groundwork for his career by taking STEM courses in 2017 and 2018 with iD Tech at the University of Maryland (UMD) where he earned Certificates of Completion in various courses in technology. By doing so, he also earned continuing education units with Villanova University. In 2018, he had the privilege of being accepted into the “Stepping Stones to your Future” STEM program held by the A. James Clark School of Engineering at UMD. In addition to completing STEM courses at UMD, he completed STEM courses while in middle school and high school. During the pandemic, Terence started working as a Software Tech Intern for the family firm by assisting with the setup of automated document software. Terence graduated from Dr. Henry Wise, Jr. High School in Spring 2021.
Terence was accepted to Frostburg State University in Fall 2021 where he majored in Computer Science and earned a 3.0 GPA during his first semester. He continued his internship with the family firm while in college, and he was responsible for software updates, researching new software developments that could assist the firm, setting up remote workstations, IT troubleshooting, and website updates. In Spring of 2023, Terence discovered that the Computer Information Systems (CIS) major suited his interest and skills better. As a CIS student, Terence was always ready for a challenge which he demonstrated with his recent accomplishments in 2024. During his Database Management Systems course in Fall 2024, he participated in a group project involving the creation of an SQL-based database. In December 2024, he had the honor of attending the Computer Science IT showcase to present his database project along with his group, and his hard work resulted in him earning an A in the course. The second recent accomplishment that he was most proud of was using his coding skills to build a speech recognition program for the family firm in September 2024 to aid the owner who suffered a physical injury to her dominant hand and arm. The accomplishment not only emphasized Terence’s compassion for those in need of accessibility, but it also highlighted his innovativeness and foresight because he saw a need and took the initiative to develop the program without being directed.
Terence loved the Lord with all his heart and it showed. Whenever you saw Terence, you saw him wearing a necklace with either his St. Christopher medal or a cross. He was baptized at Trinity A.M.E. Zion church in Washington, D.C. when he was one year old. In January 2020, Terence joined Kingdom Fellowship, A.M.E. church in Beltsville, MD with his mother and brother and attended services during breaks from college. As a good steward to the church, Terence was also a service to others by volunteering his time and skills. In 2020, he volunteered for the AARP Foundation to feed the community. In 2021, he volunteered his time to the Payne Memorial A.M.E. Church in Jessup, Maryland by conducting research for the rebuilding and redesigning of the church’s website to make it more user friendly for the elderly in the church. In 2021, he also volunteered at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church as a parking lot attendant at its COVID vaccination site.
To be such a young man, Terence Nuar created a legacy far beyond his years in such a brief period of time. Each day that he was in our lives, however short, was a blessing and a gift from God.
Terence is survived by his mother (Lisa Chanel), father (Terence Girod Liley), brother (Girod Aasir Liley), maternal grandmother (Jacqueline P. Lyons), and paternal grandfather (Milton Liley). He was welcomed into heaven by family members who were close to him and loved and adored him in this life, his paternal grandmother (Doris Liley), maternal great-grandfather (George Wesley Lyons), great-aunt (Cynthia Chavious), and great uncles (Albert Peterson and Kenneth Chavious).
