Ms. Nancy was my friend and neighbor in St. Michaels, and I will miss her terribly. Her wisdom, kindness, and above all, good humor was a blessing to me. Especially the humor. We would sit on her porch where she kept hanging baskets of beautiful flowers, and feed the squirrels peanuts. Some of those same squirrels would come over to my garden and eat just a little bit of my ripening tomatoes. I'd tell Ms. Nancy she wasn't feeding the squirrels enough, and she'd say they needed some variety in their diet in the way of my tomatoes. She was a professional cook, and I'm from Alabama, so we would talk about recipes A LOT; how to make this or that, what we added to make things just a bit unique, and I am proud to say she approved of my cornbread and key lime pie. What joy she brought to me, and to many here in St. Michaels!
