Sorry to hear about Myrna. She will be missed, especially at Ebenezer. Remembering the candy she always had for the kids and announcing the words to a song. She was always there to support others no matter the situation. Myrna’s poems and spoken words were outstanding and heartfelt. May your love of God comfort you and give you strength.
With sympathy and love,

Deacon Billy and Family:

There are two things anyone who knew Myrna could say - 1) She loved the Lord and 2) She loved her family - - and she was unapologetic with both! Myrna preached wherever she went and she was, by far, the best story-teller EVER! Myrna could talk about the love of Jesus and you could see Him. She would talk about the power of the Holy Ghost and you would feel Him. And she would talk about the majesty of God and you would bow in humble submission. Her love for her family was boundless and all of us remember two lines she would say - - "Don't mess with Bill" and "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

Myrna has been mentor, mother, messenger, a walking miracle and so much more. Her absence in the community of faith has ripple effects across the country and beyond. I am going to miss her deeply and thank God for her being in my life. She was uniquely fitted and framed to love abundantly. We will all cry much and celebrate loudly for the life she lived and shared - - always pointing to heaven as her goal.

A great woman, a loyal and grateful wife, her husband's devotion to her was as unique as her talents and strength. She was a teacher in and out of school, a religious and gracious personality. She loved her family and clung to life with their help and encouragement. It is hard to believe and comprehend how she managed her illness for years and years. She possessed enormous strength of will, faith, character. A beautiful woman, a really nice person, she was our neighbor on Fordham Court, kind, tolerant, patient, and understanding of everyone. She reveled when her family was near, but none was closer than her magnificent husband whose devotion renewed her love and desire to live. In the hearts of those who loved her she will live forever. May comfort and consolation only come to those who stood by her and loved her soon.

What an abundant life, full of grace, that was Myrna T. Powell. Whenever we encountered her, it was an enlightened conversation. The mention of her name anywhere, and it was amazing that there was always someone who knew her. I met the Tatum family almost 50 years ago. While the faith community has lost a true prayer warrior, we know that this rest is her reward for always fighting the good fight. Rest in peace, Myrna, knowing that your legacy lives on. Sincere condolences to the family. May God grant you peace.

Myrna T. as I always called her, was the real deal. She can never be duplicated. She was the greatest and always strong in her faith. I had the pleasure of working with Myrna in Regional I Office, Baltimore City Public School System. She taught me a lot and always gave excellent advice. She was an excellent speech therapist/ educator and will truly be missed. My prayers are with the family and may GOD continue to bless them and give allstrength as they go through this time of bereavement.

Dear Tatum and Powell Families,

There are only a few people whose singular voice, image, and reputation are so big that just one name is required for instant recognition and acknowledgement by tens of thousands of people. Such was the case for Myrna.

I met Myrna as a child when she a teenager, and a close friend to my cousin Marlene Pryor. I got a chance to watch Myrna grow over the years from a popular and active church member and choir director, into a prayer warrior whose deep contralto speaking voice and singing voice resonated throughout Ebenezer Baptist and Baltimore churches, and then grow into a much in demand nationally known evangelist and speaker.

While some people's spiritual lives stand still after they are baptized in their youth, that was never the case for Myrna who continued to grow as a Christian, a woman of faith, and servant of God throughout her lifetime.

I want to thank Myrna for remaining a friend to my mother Lavinia Dorsey throughout her long life, as one by one most most people she knew have departed. Myrna took time recently on March 1 to wish my mom a Happy 92nd Birthday, and by all accounts, she sounded like her usual upbeat and positive self.

While our paths only occasionally passed later in our lives, I will cherish those times when on more than one occasion a brief encounter with Myrna in a checkout line at Security Square Mall turned in a one hour long conversation. On those occasions the store staff and other customers stopped what they were doing to listen as our conversation shifted into a prayer, and even a song from Myrna, right there in middle of Macy's or Sears. Myrna demonstrated that she had the heart of a true evangelist, because she was not about to miss out on an opportunity to share the Gospel, the path to salvation, no matter where it was!

Thank you Myrna Tatum Powell for a life well-lived, and for sharing your many spiritual gifts with so many people, both saved and unsaved, for so long. Finally, thank you Tatum and Powell families for generously sharing your wife, sister, mother and grandmother with a grateful church, city, state, and nation for decades. My prayers are with all of you at this time.

Yours in Christ,
Linda Dorsey-Walker
